Program Description

1. Students are selected after submission of an application form and two teacher recommendations.

2. Parents and students attend a general orientation where they receive the history, mission and goals of the organizations, student and parental responsibilities and the schedule and itinerary for the current year's field-study program. Field-study, is what we call the framework for the varied connections among the traditional academic disciplines of language arts and social studies infused with technology and experiential learning.

3. The academic enrichment is focused on increasing student proficiency in written and oral communication skills. We require students to explore writing and oral presentations as an instrument of learning.

4. When our students and teacher chaperones travel to Africa, they probe school curriculums, student work, newsletters and publications. We join in secondary classess ranging from Math, to Science to Literature. Host-country students provide tours of the school and frequently hold assemblies which include how the other is viewed on opposite ends of the Atlantic. Many students want to know whether the images that are portrayed in media (movies, television, music and magazines)are real or created.

5. Despite our differences, we all deal with issues basic to the human experience. How do we dispel misconceptions and stereotypes based on cultural differences? KTA understands that promoting intercultural dialogue for students across continents forever changes their perspective.
